There is a difference between feeling alone and feeling lonely.
When we feel lonely, it is because we are, for a while, separated from other people, from the things that connect us to the outside world or from the social construct that gives meaning to our existence. For example, we miss friends or family and we don’t know how to spend our time. Loneliness is scary to many people; it seems like a huge gap that somehow has to be filled. There are people who feel lonely all the time and as a result cannot stop running around doing things, trying to kill time. The feeling of being alone is a spiritual one; it is not driven by fear. It is a longing of the soul to be integrated with parts of our being that have become separated. Aloneness is peaceful, it is really a reconciliation (alone means all one). It is a safe place deep inside one wishes to visit from time to time.
The human being is made up of the body, the mind and the spirit but those different aspects are not necessarily united within an individual. The higher mind acts as the binding force that unites the physical and spiritual aspects within us but in order to reach our higher mind we have to free ourselves from any obstacles that stand our way to the top. What happens most of the times is that we are consumed by the lower mind which processes information coming from the senses. We are so busy looking for happiness in the outer world that we forget to search inside ourselves for the answers to our worries. We do not work our way to self realization. To many people, completeness is something that can be found in a shop. Therefore, the more we attend to our physical needs and overlook our spiritual self, the more we suffer isolation, loneliness and depression.
To reach self-realization, we have to work through the physical level. Then, we should keep an open heart which is able to feel empathy, compassion and unconditional love. We also have to cultivate an open, intuitive mind. Transformative Therapy can show us the way to achieve all that, because it can get things in perspective and release the mind from restrictive and negative thought patterns. We all have a creative side within us and once we get in touch with it again, we can feel free from hurt and pain and powerful enough to initiate change.
